What Is Biofield Tuning?
Biofield Tuning is a sound-based therapy in which a practitioner sounds a tuning fork in the space around your body, listening for where the tone changes, and working with those areas to help your system settle. It was developed by Eileen McKusick, who began working with tuning forks in 1996, and has trained thousands of practitioners worldwide through the Biofield Tuning Institute since 2010.
That’s the short answer. Here’s why I needed it badly enough to build a practice around it.
Why I Went Looking For It
I didn’t come to Biofield Tuning out of curiosity. I came to it because I’d run out of other options.
I’d done talk therapy, multiple rounds, for years. I understood my patterns. I could trace the anxiety back to where it came from and explain it articulately to anyone who asked. And I was still lying on my kitchen floor, sobbing next to the dishwasher, because something in me had finally refused to keep going.
I looked capable from the outside. Successful business, the house, all the markers that said everything was fine. Privately, I was fraying – jaw permanently clenched, awake at 3am over an email I knew wasn’t a threat, snapping at my daughter and drowning in guilt for the rest of the day. Rest didn’t reach me anymore. I’d take time off and spend the whole break scrolling, unable to actually land.
Therapy had given me insight. Meditation had given me temporary relief. Neither one settled my body.
A few more years passed and I collected a few more practioner trainings (I felt I had to heal myself because I was so broken and “bad” that it would be cheaper and less shameful to DIY. These helped but I still felt like something was wrong with me at a very deep level.
My first Biofield Tuning session was remote, and I was sceptical – I didn’t understand how sound could work through a screen. The practitioner sounded the fork, and within seconds I was sobbing. Now this wasn’t because I was thinking about anything difficult. I wasn’t reliving a memory or talking. The fork had hit something on my timeline, and my body just let go. I sobbed for twenty minutes, and afterwards I felt lighter than I had in years.
Insight lives in the mind. The alarm lives in the body. Mine had been holding a stress response for decades, long after my mind had already processed what caused it – and no amount of understanding was ever going to turn that off on its own.
What Biofield Tuning Is Built On
The word “biofield” refers to the field of energy said to surround and move through the body – a real term, coined at a 1992 NIH conference and defined there as a field that surrounds and permeates living things. What Biofield Tuning adds to that – that stress and emotion leave a kind of residue in this field, and that a tuning fork can locate and work with it – is the method’s own framework. It isn’t something mainstream physics has independently confirmed, and I’d rather say that plainly than oversell it.
What is measurable is simpler: sound is physical, it moves through a physical body, and the body responds to vibration in ways that are understood at a cellular level. What happens after that – how your system responds to steady, coherent sound after years of holding tension – is where the real work sits.
What Does a Biofield Tuning Session Involve?
You stay fully clothed. You lie down, and the practitioner works with tuning forks in the space around your body, sounding them and listening for where the tone shifts. There’s no need to talk through your history. A session typically runs for sixty minutes. The forks do the listening. If you’re curious what the forks are actually doing, and why the ones I use differ from the ones you may have seen online, I’ve explained it in Tuning Forks for Healing.
Some people feel warmth, yawning, or a sense of something releasing. Afterwards, most feel calm, sometimes tired, occasionally emotional, with changes often continuing to unfold over the following days – better sleep, lighter mood, less reactivity.
What that actually sounds and feels like – and what makes these forks different from the ones you’ve seen elsewhere – I’ve broken down further in Tuning Forks for Healing.)
How Is This Different From a Sound Bath or Reiki?
A sound bath is ambient – it washes over a room, and everyone has broadly the same experience. Biofield Tuning is one-to-one and precise: the practitioner is locating specific areas of resistance in your individual field and working directly with them. Reiki works through touch or near-touch, using a different model of how energy moves; Biofield Tuning works specifically in the space around the body. If you’re curious how the evidence for Reiki and similar approaches compares, I’ve covered that in what the research says about Biofield Tuning.
Is There Evidence For Biofield Tuning?
Early research is encouraging but limited. A 2023 feasibility study found real reductions in anxiety, and a larger trial is currently under way. It isn’t yet backed by large randomised studies – worth knowing going in. What I can tell you is what I’ve seen: women who’ve spent years in therapy describing, in a single session, a shift that conversation never reached.
I’ve gone through what the studies found, and what they can’t tell us yet, in Does Biofield Tuning Work?
Why I Trained In It
I trained with Eileen McKusick because this reached the place my own pattern had been running, and nothing else had. I now work with women who are exactly where I was – capable on the outside, fraying on the inside, done with talking about the problem and ready for something that actually settles the body.
If you’ve done the work, understood your patterns, and you’re still lying awake with a body that won’t stand down, this might be what finally reaches you. My full Biofield Tuning page covers what a session involves, the research in more depth, and how to book one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Biofield Tuning?
A sound-based therapy using tuning forks to work with the field of energy around your body, developed by Eileen McKusick in 1996 and taught through the Biofield Tuning Institute since 2010.
Is Biofield Tuning the same as a sound bath?
No. A sound bath is ambient and shared across a room. Biofield Tuning is one-to-one, working with your individual field specifically.
How long is a Biofield Tuning session?
Typically sixty minutes.
Is there scientific evidence for Biofield Tuning?
A 2023 feasibility study found reduced anxiety, and a larger trial is under way. It isn’t yet backed by large randomised studies but further research is on going.
Do I need to talk about my past during a session?
Not unless you want to. The forks do the listening – you don’t need to narrate your history.
